Health and Fitness Subject Statement 

Why do we study this subject at ACE Tiverton? 

The Health and Fitness curriculum is designed to help support our student’s personal development through acquiring skills and knowledge in sport, exercise, and fitness. The subject also allows students to gain personal transferrable skills that can be applied to the workplace or further study.  

The Health and Fitness curriculum will provide opportunities for students to:   

  • Participate in a wide range of physical activities 

  • Develop competence to be effective participants in a broad range of physical activities 

  • Understand the importance of a healthy diet    

  • Adopt a fitter and healthier lifestyle 

  • Learn how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.  

What qualifications can I achieve in this subject? 

Leadership Skills Foundation: Level 1 in Sports Leadership

Leadership Skills Foundation: Level 2 in Community Sports Leadership 

 

What skills will I learn and practice in this subject? 

Through the Health and Fitness curriculum, ACE Tiverton aims to equip students with the skills that they need to be involved in sport and physical activity, so that they remain involved throughout their life, in line with their choices and capabilities.  

 

Participation in physical activity is a positive habit that can enhance an individual’s lifestyle and may have important implications for health. 

 

Students will develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent learning and problem-solving, to more tricky-to-measure skills such as:   

 

  • An appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress   

  • Appropriate interpersonal skills   

  • Communicating with professional colleagues/peers and/or hierarchical seniors   

  • Supporting other aspiring employees   

  • Personal manners and deportment  

 

 

What jobs and post 16 education opportunities can I go on to do with this subject?  

The qualification pathway embedded within the Health and Fitness curriculum prepares students for a career in the outdoor and/or sport and active leisure sectors, and with further learning they may ultimately hold roles such as: 

 

• fitness instructor  

• personal trainer  

• specialist instructor in Sport/Outdoor Education 

• gym manager  

• sports development officer 

• sports development manager 

• sport activator  

• sports coach 

 

As an option for post 16 education, students who successfully achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Sport may choose to progress onto: 

 

• Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing  

• Intermediate Apprenticeship in Exercise and Fitness  

• Intermediate Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership  

• Level 3 Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma in Sport  

• Level 3 Award in Nutrition for Physical Activity 

 

 

What else should I know about this subject? 

Students will present evidence of their activities in an organised portfolio or e-portfolio. 

 

This will contain: 

  • A record of activities and tasks completed, with supporting evidence  

  • Recording documents, showing how students have planned and reviewed their activities 

  • Summary of achievement, highlighting the skills that have been developed 

  • Personal statements 

 

Do I need any specific resources or kit for this subject? 

On the days when students have Health and Fitness, students should ensure that they are wearing appropriate footwear for physical activity. The ACE Tiverton uniform (tracksuit bottoms and polo shirt) is suitable for practical lessons.
